Introduction to Burlington

The City of Burlington is located at the western end of Lake Ontario, nestled between the waterfront and the Niagara Escarpment. The population is approximately 163,800 but the city still has a small-town feel to it.

The Downtown is vibrant with its many shops and eating establishments. Spencer Smith Park is a great venue for the many summer events, such as the Sound of Music Festival in June and Canada’s largest Rib Festival, Ribfest, in August. Discovery Landing features an observatory, the Rotary Centennial Pond which is a skating rink in the winter, plus Spencer’s Restaurant.

The park also has an amazing playground and the Dofasco Waterjet Plaza, a wonderful place to spend the day with your family.

The Waterfront Trail offers a safe and beautiful place to walk your dog or ride your bike. We have our Art Centre, Joseph Brant Museum and Ireland House, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Bronte Provincial Park and so much more.

A Centre for the Performing Arts is well on its way to completion at the corner of Locust and Elgin Streets. And although there have been a few snags with the marina at the foot of Brant Street, it will prove to be worth the wait.

Burlington has a blend of specialty shops, Burlington Mall, Mapleview Mall, and new malls in the Millcroft area. There are plenty of sports facilities, more parks that you could ever use, theatre groups, art galleries and libraries.

Burlington is perfectly located. Our weather is usually temperate, missing many of the winter storms that hit Buffalo and Toronto. I can’t imagine why you would ever want to leave Burlington, even for the day, but if you did, Toronto is just 40 minutes away and Niagara Falls an hour. And we have excellent GO service for the commuter.

Burlington is a wonderful, safe place to raise your children. Everything you need is right here. Great schools, churches, parks, recreational and sports facilities, terrific shopping and dining out – what more could you ask for!

Places I frequent and people I trust

Flowers – Blossoms, 399 Elizabeth Street, Unit 5, 905-637-9367. I can always count on the arrangement to be beautiful and unique.

Hairdresser – Terry Brocklehurst, 905-467-6406. On my bad-hair days, Terry would rather I didn't tell you she's my hairdresser, but she is an absolute artist with scissors.

Manicures, etc. – Tina, 905-634-4085, at Get Nailed on Fairview Street, just east of Guelph Line. My husband thinks I just get manicures and pedicures here, but whenever I need pampering, like a facial or a massage, this is the number I call.

Groceries – Marilu’s, 4025 New Street at Walker’s Line. If you want the best of everything, this is the place to find it. And if they don’t have it, owners Mario and Lou will try to get it for you.

Cameras and Photographic Equipment - Digby, at Duncan & Wright, 3350 Fairview Street, 905-634-5545. This is where Eddie buys all his toys. This is why I'll never be able to retire.

Car Repairs – Wayne Taylor at Canadian Tire Store, Burlington Mall at Fairview. If Wayne says it needs to be fixed, it needs to be fixed; we trust him.

Clothing (Women’s) – The Oyster, 460 Pearl Street. We’re getting more and more nice clothing stores in Burlington, especially Downtown, but in my mind nothing compares to The Oyster and the special service you get from owner Kathy MacFarlane and her team.

Clothing (Men’s) – Bush’s Men’s Wear, 375 Brant Street. It’s difficult to get my husband to shop for himself. If I tell Eddie something looks really good on him, he doesn’t really believe me. But he listens to the gentlemen at Bush’s. Would I lie to him?

Restaurants – I haven’t yet found one that I didn’t like. However, my favourite for breakfast and lunch is Mount Royal Family Restaurant in the plaza at Brant and Mount Forest Drive. My favourite for fresh breads, specialty coffees and ambiance is Pane Fresco at 414 Locust. I also find it difficult to turn down Cathy's meatball sandwich on Thursdays at Pane Freco.
